How does Dysport work?

The active molecule in Dysport is AboBotulinumtoxin-A. This neuromodulator enters the neuromuscular junction in your muscles, and and blocks the Acetylcholine Receptors which trigger muscle contractions. By blocking Acetylcholine from reaching their receptors, the muscles will have decreased contraction responses, and allow the muscles to rest, and the skin can smoothen out your wrinkles.

Things to know before your next Dysport treatment:

Dysport starts working immediately, and decreased muscle movement is typically seen in 2-3 days.

Dysport typically lasts anywhere from 6 to 36 weeks, depending on each person’s metabolism, the dosage of Dysport that was injected, and the muscle activity in the treated area.

It is suggested to schedule your next Dysport appointment 3 months away, just before the active molecules start wearing out, to ensure optimal wrinkle reduction. Once you learn how your body metabolizes Dysport, your appointments can be spread 4 or 5 months apart, depending on your needs.

For at least 24 hours before your appointment, avoid alcoholic beverages, and non-prescription blood-thinners such as Aspirin for pain, other NSAIDs, and fish oil. These medications thin the blood, and increase the chance of bruising.

Dysport is not used in pregnant or breastfeeding patients. Please inform our staff and reschedule your appointment if necessary. It is your responsibility to inform our staff if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Post-treatment instructions:

After your Dysport treatment, you may feel tenderness at the injection sites. This is completely normal, and will fade away within a few hours.

If desired, Tylenol or Acetaminophen can be taken to treat mild pains or aches.

If you bruise easily, Arnica Tablets can be taken before and after your treatments to decrease chance of bruising. If any bruises appear, they will typically heal within a few days.

After your treatment, avoid direct sunlight to prevent skin dryness. It is recommended to apply SPF protection a few hours after treatment.

If skin is not dry or irritated, makeup may be applied a few hours after treatment as well.

Some people may experience a mild headache after injections. This is not due to Dysport, but because of the injections around the forehead. Over the counter Tylenol or Acetaminophen can be used as directed.
