What is Cellulite?

We commonly hear about “lumpy butts” or “cottage cheese thighs,” but what exactly is causing that rippled, dimpled look on the skin? Cellulite. Cellulite is a collection of fat that pushes against your connective tissues beneath your skin. Cellulite appears on areas prone to fat accumulation, such as the thighs, stomach and butt. Unlike other conditions with fat accumulation, such as lipedema, cellulite is completely cosmetic. It is not painful, nor does it go hand-in-hand with other medical conditions. Instead, it just looks bad.

Cellulite is also not connected to weight. Thin women get just as much cellulite as plus size women; however, gaining weight may make your cellulite more apparent. As you get older, your skin gets thinner as well. This makes cellulite more visible.

Your surgeon will look at your skin to decide how severe your cellulite is on a scale of 0-3. Zero means no cellulite while Grade 3 cellulite means you have severe dimpling when you sit or stand. You will notice pits in your skin as well as raised areas.

How Do Women Get Cellulite?

No one knows exactly how cellulite forms, but we do know that it affects up to 90% of women on at least one part of their body.

Underneath your skin is a vast network of fibrous bands. These bands connect to your muscles. If they’re working well, these bands will keep the skin elevated above the muscle. However, if they tighten irregularly, they will bring the skin down. This pushes the fat under the skin up. They then meet and give you that dimpled appearance you don’t want. As these muscles becomes tighter, the fat pockets can get larger and misshapen. This leads to a more puckered appearance on the skin.

However, as we stated above, there’s no known cause for the process described above—all we know is what it look like under a microscope. There are a few theories on what may lead to the development of this cycle, including:

  • Poor diet
  • Hormones
  • Drugs, alcohol
  • Genetics
  • Weight gain
  • Inactivity
  • Pregnancy

Why Do Women Get Cellulite?

Not only do we not know what causes cellulite, we also do not know why women are more likely to deal with it than men. After all, men can suffer from everything on the above list (with the exception of pregnancy if they’re cis-men), yet t only affects an estimated 10% of men versus 90% of women. Go figure!

However, these is one theory that seems to be the most likely for explaining why women get cellulite in much greater numbers than me, and it has to do with the connective bands we discussed in our last section. The best way to think of those things in men is like an overpass on the freeway system. They’re crisscrossed together. Women’s, however, are not built that way. Instead, women’s connective bands are like the lanes of the road, running parallel with one another. This may make puckering appear more apparent than crisscross bands.

Another theory is that women simply have weaker skin and connective tissue, as well as larger fat cells, that make cellulite more apparent.

Whatever the cause of female cellulite, we know that it can feel like a debilitating condition for many women psychologically. Although there are thousands of OTC products on the market that promise to get rid of cellulite, many simply do not work. Lotions and creams can only offer a temporary fix like plumping up the skin. For years, the only way to treat cellulite was with surgery. This required extensive skin removal and down time, plus surgical costs, which made the treatment unobtainable for most women. So, many relegated themselves to having cellulite and learning to live with it, until QWO.

How to Treat Cellulite with QWO

QWO is a non-surgical, injectable treatment that works to reduce the appearance of cellulite. It is also one of only a few FDA treatment that’s been cleared for cellulite treatment.

Your surgeon will inject QWO directly into the cellulite divots (those pockets of fat we discussed earlier). The enzymes in the treatment, known as collagenases, dissolves this fat by causing the bands to soften and stop tightening. This means that your skin becomes smoother, and the appearance of the dimples softens. Many people who have Grade 3 cellulite will find their skin completely loses that cottage cheese appearance when standing and miniscule dimpling when sitting while lesser grade cellulite disappears completely.

Furthermore, clinical trials show that QWO may also encourage the body to redistribute fat cells as well as increase collagen production. That means less cellulite and plumper, fuller skin at the treatment site.

Side effects of QWO are minimal. You may experience some soreness, itching and bruising at the injection site, but these issues will clear up within a few days. Unlike other treatments, QWO is non-invasive, and patients have minimal (if any) downtime.

Although some people may only opt for a single treatment, you will need to complete the full three injection treatment plan to see the best results. These treatments must be spaced a minimum of 21 days apart which means you will see full results within 90 days of beginning treatment. However, once your complete your treatment plan, you can expect to see the results last for several years.

Who Qualifies for QWO

There are a few criteria for getting QWO treatments, including:

  • Women who are 18+ with cellulite
  • Not pregnant or nursing
  • Those with excessive bleeding conditions or on blood thinners
  • Allergic to the ingredients
  • Suffering from an infection in the intended treatment area

As long as you meet these criteria, you should be able to have great results with QWO. Your treatment will look something like this:

Your treatment should be completed in less than an hour with the injections themselves taking only ten minutes. Your doctor will treat 6-12 dimples at a time to ensure you get the best results. This will allow the skin to plump up and the cellulite to dissolve without overwhelming the area. You then need to stay in the same position you were in for a few minutes to let the area rest before dressing and leaving. When you leave, make sure you were a supportive garment like yoga pants or spandex bike shorts on the treatment area to ensure the best results.
